About Lake Forest

The beautiful natural setting of Lake Forest ensured its success from the beginning. As early as 1869, the little city was described as being "the most exclusive and aristocratic of all the Chicago's suburbs." The arrival of the Farwell brothers attracted more notoriety for the young community. Mr. John V. Farwell's house was one of the most expensive in Lake Forest, and he quickly became its most famous resident. He and his brother, Charles, found many common interests with the other citizens; raising young families, education, services at the Presbyterian Church and proximity to their commercial and charitable pursuits in Chicago. They also invested in prize livestock, which left another distinguishing mark on the community–the development of country estates–a trend begun in the early 1890s.
